Direct lighting is the type of light that illuminates an area or object, light's source is visible and may dazzle you if directly looked into the light's source.
Indirect lighting is the type of light that illuminates in upward direction to the ceiling and light's source is not visible, mainly used for creating atmosphere when watching TV.
Decorative lighting is used mainly with glass sculptures where, for example, the light highlights the sculpture's art structure and colours that all together create dominant element making everyone look at it over and over again.
Energy consumption? The last question about the choice nowadays is concern for the immense electricity consumption, but luckily, there is no need to be concerned about energy consumption these days. Common incandescent light bulb chandeliers can be fitted with modern LED bulbs, which have around 4W of energy consumption and that is the equivalent to 40W of an incandescent light bulb, furthermore, many modern lights can be fitted with energy saving LED systems operated wirelessly both via bluetooth or a home app running on your phone.
